WASSUP?

Journal Entry: Thu Feb 14, 2008, 12:40 PM

Well, since it's February 14th, I suppose I better wish everyone a Happy Valentines Day. =]

As you can probably tell (due to the snazzy journal), I recently got a subscription. I think it was a great investment, and recommend it to those who spend a fair amount of time on dA. Journal credit goes to +ipholio. You can get this journal style yourself by clicking 'Get This CSS' above.

It's about this time I wish I knew CSS myself so I could code myself a journal. :/

Here's the deal on the art front. Expect more photography more than anything else, because I need to prepare for my photography exam that's taking place soon, so I may end up posting a few preliminary pieces here.
As for the exam, I'm undecided on which topic to choose. There's ';Portraiture' (which would be something new to me, and a challenge), 'Detail' (which involves photographs depicting the natural landscape or 'Combining Human and Mechanical Forms' (quite a narrow topic, but allows for Photoshop magic).
There's some other choices, but I felt most strongly motivated by those ones. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Continuing with the photography theme, I've recently been learning about film developing and darkroom techniques, which has been nothing short of awesome. Pretty tricky (when you have to attatch the film to a reel without being able to see what you're doing :/), but really interesting and rewarding.

Went to the Bradford Media Museum for a film workshop yesterday, which was a right laugh. Our task was to go out and shoot an advert for the museum, and then return to the editing suite and chop and edit the footage using iMovie (and some snazzay iMacs) to create the final piece. I had a great time doing it, and I recommend the museum to anyone. It's an awesome building inside.

I've also been recently doing some SitePoint (now 99designs) competitions, so I may get round to doing some more of those.

College is taking up 90% of my time, what with the AS Levels, extra GCSE and my new degree module course (starting on Saturday). That's even less time to spend in PS. Darn it.

Anyway, that's it for now.

Hope you're all doing well, and thanks a lot for the 6000 pageviews, favourites, watches and such. It's all appreciated. ;)

Nice journal Mr. Subscriber :P

Good luck with your photography, the 'Combining Human and Mechanical Forms' sounds like it could be fun :D

I think Portraiture would be the most rewarding, but you'll have to find the faces in the wild and be gutsy enough to ask for photos of them.
Detail sounds like the easy way out, surely just landscapes/macro work?
Combining Human and Mechanical Forms sounds like a challenge, I'm not a huge fan of photo-manips so I'd be trying to meet both parts in one photo. Maybe shots of builders working? Or two photos side by side, but with an obvious relationship.

Anyway good luck with college, exams getting ever nearer :P

And cheers for the feature, glad you like my work that much!

That's a nice idea for the Mechanical Forms topic, but it does say to 'use any appropriate techniques to combine photographs of human and mechanical forms'. I might be wrong, but to me, it sounds like they're looking for a definite incoporation of two pictures as one. So, things like double exposure and photomanipulation .etc
I just think the topic choice is too limited.

Detail does seem like the easy way out to me, and I've got some ideas, but I keep going back to portraiture. Like you said, it's just about finding willing volunteers...

It does, but I think it would be pretty limiting. Thanks!

I reckon "combining human and mechanical forms" doesn't seem very photographic. =/

I'd personally go with portraiture.

I understand what you mean. You obviously have to manip your own photos, but that would force me to take them with a stock photography mind on, rather than an artistic one. I'd be looking for the easiest way to do this or that, rather than thinking about a photo like I usually would.

Some of the topic choices are really wierd. There's one entitled 'Web Page', where you have to present your work through a website. However, there's no rules at all about the photographs themselves.

I think I'll do portraiture. =P
